GRASONVILLE — Eddie Murphy of Grasonville, a client of Chesterwye Center for adults with development disabilities, returned to the center as a “conquering hero” on Monday, Aug. 3. He was greeted with a celebration by his fellow Chesterwye residents, who recognized him for winning a gold medal at the 2015 Special Olympics World Games, held in Los Angeles, Calif., July 25 through Aug. 2. Murphy won the 500-meter bicycle race to bring home the gold medal. He also brought home fifth and seventh place medals in two other cycling races. The Chesterwye Center was decorated with colorful streamers and blue and yellow balloons. A large cake was ready to add to the celebration. Several large signs were posted around the center congratulating Murphy on his accomplishments. Murphy was sponsored by Kent Island Elks, Lodge 2576, in Stevensville, and also the Kent Island Papa John’s Pizzaria, in Chester. They provided several thousand dollars to help with expenses for Murphy’s trip to Los Angeles. The remainder of his expenses were paid for by Maryland Special Olympics. Murphy’s sister, Alice Webb of Chester, accompanied him for six days of his two-week trip. She said, “He wants to do it again at the next World Games.” The next Special Olympics World Games will be held in Austria in 2019. A man of few words, Murphy said, “I loved being there, but I just want to get back to being me now.” He celebrated his 45th birthday Saturday, Aug. 8. |
